Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) is the Dutch version of North America's Santa Claus. In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas arrives approximately three weeks before sinterklaasavond (Saint Nicholas' Eve), December 5th, which is considered the chief night for gift-giving.
This past Sunday, Sinterklaas arrived by boat along one of Amsterdam's many canals. Traditionally, Sinterklaas would have arrived seated on a white horse; however, his more unorthodox arrival didn't stop hundreds of families and children from lining the canal to catch a glimpse of him.
