A Year Already?

It's hard to believe that one year ago today we arrived in Amsterdam to start our "Dutch Way of Life". An account of our arrival and first impressions can be found here.

It has been a wonderful year, full of so many new experiences, new friends, new memories, and some delightfully wacky Dutchisms we will surely miss one day. In honour of our first anniversary in the Netherlands, we thought we would give you a little sampling of some of our favourite wacky things you will only see here in Amsterdam. Enjoy!

Horses pulling Heineken beer kegs through the streets of Amsterdam

The main form a transportation for Dutch kids - the Bakfiets

A fairly elaborate and permanent public urinal for the gentlemen

A blow-up pool with a grown man sitting in it on a main shopping street
(This pool was masterfully filled by a hose coming out of the window of a third-floor apartment)

An aging Boy George singing from a canal boat on Pride Day

The infamous fake wood-paneled car on our street

Hup Holland Hup orange print toilet paper in honour of the World Cup

Two Canadians wearing way more orange than they ever thought was legally possible

  1. I really enjoyed reading this post! I saw a Bakfiet at Main street's car free day and it was called a "cargo bike" there. I would love one to carry Natasha around town.

Orange looks great on you two and your hair looks great! Congratulations on your one year anniversary in Holland!
